B17 Memorial Service

B17 Memorial Service

The sky's were clear and the sun shone warmly, as though the weather itself recognised the poignancy of the moment as a small, but thoughtful group gathered at the East Horndon church to remember one amongst countless tragic losses from WWII.

On the 25th of September, 1943 a terrible accident occurred as two B17 Bombers collided in the sky above East Horndon when returning from a successful mission. All but one of the crew lost their lives.

To honour their memories a small service was held at the church, supported by the Mayor and Mayoress of Brentwood, the USAF assistant air attaché lieutenant Colonel L. Najeeb Ahmed and service veterans from the local area.

Nine cadets from 1483 (Brentwood) Squadron were in attendance with their standard bearer and standard to show their respect to the young men that gave their lives for the freedom and prosperity that we enjoy today.
