Canoe Launch

Sunday the 13th of June was a memorable day for 1483 (Brentwood) squadron, for it was the day of the long awaited launch of their new canoes and Kayaks. With a gratefully received contribution from the RAF Charitable Trust, our squadron were able to purchase 8 kayaks and 2 open canoes. Eager to get out on the water 14 cadets met at HQ at 08:30 sharp where they loaded up an headed off to the Papermill Lock on the river Chelmer.

Taking to the water for the first time the group split into two halves, one group using the kayaks and the other group using the two person open canoes. Each group paddled up river learning how to control their craft and having a lot of fun at the same time. Ever heard of the Goon stroke? Well it’s not something from a 60’s comedy show, it’s the correct way to paddle and control the open canoes, but it takes a bit of mastering.

After meeting for lunch at the next lock up the river, the groups swapped craft and headed back to the Papermill Lock. Now was time for some games in the kayaks like trying to grab a peg from other people’s kayak whilst protecting your own, it caused a few wobbles and lots of laughs. There was also time to practice an important safety drill, by deliberately capsizing the kayak and learning an assisted recovery. Good fun but the water was surprisingly cold for a sunny mid June afternoon.

A great time was had by all and now thanks to the RAF Charitable Trust the squadron can look forward to many more days like that.
