Gliding

Gliding

Gliding has always been one of the more exotic activities that the ATC has to offer, and Sunday 20th November was no exception. Three cadets from 1483 (first class cadets: Cox, Davies and Robinson) gathered at squadron headquarters ready for an exciting day at Wethersfield gliding school.

Once at the base, the cadets were introduced to some of the staff that worked at the school. Sgt Smeaton from our own squadron was also present.

After a safety brief from the staff, the cadets had the chance to go and have a closer look at the aircraft they would be flying- the Viking T1. They learnt about the controls, the instruments, how to hook the winch onto the aircraft and also the take-off drill.

After an hour or so, the cadets walked out onto the 2 mile-long runway to put their new found knowledge to the test. Unfortunately, due to poor visibility, Cadet Cox did not get to fly, however he said that he thoroughly enjoyed the rest of the day.

All three of the cadets thought the day was a superb experience and would love to do it again
